First Brexit, now this cock-up.

I feel like someone died. I woke up this morning with that burst of fresh grief that swamps you when you remember that your world has crumbled.

Overnight we lost a truly great president – yeah, yeah I know it’s not official until January, but it’s not like he gets to stay – who has held office for 8 years and dragged America kicking and screaming into a brighter future, and we lost the possibility of having another great president who cared about the country at all levels. The differences between Hillary Clinton and Trump are so many they could fill a dozen Grand Canyons, the main one being Clinton is sane and fit to be president, Trump an abomination and a fucking joke that made me ashamed of just over half the population. But if you want to put it more elegantly than that, here it is in its simplest form: Hillary wants to serve the country, Trump wants to dictate it.

(Ugh, just writing his name makes me feel queasy. I think from now I’ll adopt Jon Stewart’s new moniker for him, Fuckface Von Clownstick. According to Twitter it’s already caught on, maybe one day we’ll see monstrous hotels that hemorrhage money with Fuckface Von Clownstick arrogantly emblazoned across the top.)

But we lost more than that.

Trump’s ludicrous plan to build a wall does not worry me, it is so absurd – and expensive – I don’t think it will get done, and on a more practical note, unless you’re constructing it out of Lego, it would take DECADES to build. Future governments aren’t going to waste their efforts on that xenophobic turkey, and crucially, it doesn’t have the support of the rest of the Republican party – they mostly think that’s a can of crazy. (And just so we’re clear the majority of people in politics think that this result is insane and are scared of a Fuckface presidency. In Washington DC, 93% voted for Clinton. 5% percent voted for independents. These are the ones who make the policy, who run the country on a day to day basis, united as they have never been before.)

No, it’s all the other stuff, the undoing of every good and precious thing we have. That’s what I am mourning.

The cretinous Hamsterhair has declared he will repeal federal spending on every green energy initiative, and pull us out of global climate change agreements. In fact he has declared climate change a ‘Chinese hoax’. See how deftly he combines ignorance, arrogance, and racism? Under Clownstick, the US carbon footprint is going to soar…right through the roof of the planet. And the Republican party WANTS this. After yesterday’s election they have all the power, and they are going to tear the country apart in order to make money because they’ve got their grubby little fingers in all the dirty manufacturing pies. Ugh, another wave of nausea.

Abortion and reproductive rights. Trump has said women who have abortions should be punished.
Do you want to take time to read that sentence again?  He wants women, who have to make a horrendously tough choice that they will carry for the rest of their lives, to be PUNISHED.

Does he want men who refuse to wear condoms to be punished? No.

Is he advocating higher conviction rates and no parole for date rapists?  No.  Not surprising considering he sees sexual assault as an acceptable hobby.

Does he want to give support to women who are carrying fetuses that most likely won’t survive more than a few months due to illness? No.  He wants to put their lives in jeopardy by forcing them to go through labour.

Does he want to give free healthcare and more financial aid to every low or middle income parent that has to raise a child that was unplanned? No.

Does he want to spend billions on reforming the social welfare system so children given up for adoption can be raised safely in loving foster homes? To not be subject to abuse and uncertainty? To get the same opportunities for higher learning as children from families that can afford to pay for an education? NOPE.

In fact the Republican party is already rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of slashing funding for Planned Parenthood. So not only does he want to PUNISH women who have a termination, but his party wants to prevent people on a lower income – which is the majority of the country, including the ones who decided to vote for Fuckface – from getting access to affordable/free contraception.

Clownstick has even said he wants to overturn Roe vs Wade.  Analysts have been saying that he won because overwhelmingly people wanted change. This change is moving us backwards, there’s zero progress here.
Whilst we’re on this topic, here’s a message to every male who voted for Snifficus, either not caring about women’s rights, or just swimming in misogyny: you can’t afford to have kids.

You can’t afford to have the kids you want. You can’t afford to have the kids you don’t want. Why? Because the wanker you just voted in and his band of merry fucktards want to overturn the affordable healthcare act and go back to the old system of the poor getting screwed.

Healthcare. He wants to scrap the affordable health care act. The Republican party want this so badly, and when they do it, we will suffer painfully.

As for international relations, and national security, and immigration issues – can the West coast just secede now please? And all those other states that are shaking with fear right now, you can come too! Or could Canada annex us? That would work, Justin Trudeau is doing a great job.

Anyone who felt that last night was a victory, fails to understand that the rest of us are now genuinely scared. I’m scared not only for the country’s safety being put in the hands of an insecure moron, who will take a nation to war because someone called him a bad name.  I’m also scared for the safety of our neighbours, colleagues, friends, family members and millions of complete strangers who don’t have the protection of being white.  Fuckface’s plans for national ‘security’ are hate crimes, plain and simple. This is a man who refused to say a bad word about the KKK.

You know what the worst thing is? Clownstick isn’t even the biggest menace of this new government. He’s a bully, he’s corrupt, he is the very definition of crooked shady business dealings, but I don’t think he actually cares that much about these fundamentally important issues, I think he just said whatever he thought would get him votes. Sadly though, the orange avenger is the mere tip of the shitberg. If he resigns, or gets assassinated, or ousted by his own party, or convicted of sexual assault (all are feasible) then we get stuck with Pence.  Mike Pence  is TERRIFYING, he is carved from right-wing prejudice, deceit and money-laden ignorance. Do a search for the things he’s said about the  LGBT community, it’s horrifying.

Actually that’s not quite the worst thing. The worst thing is this country that I think of as glorious and optimistic, where the small groups of shocking hate-mongers are outnumbered by compassionate, forward thinking people, is a lie.

For years I have defended the USA when I am overseas, telling people that what they see on TV is not the real America. That you have to come here and experience it; meet the friendly, intelligent, funny people for yourself and you will love them. Last night, watching the map turn red apart from the West Coast and the major metropolitan areas, I found myself wondering how many of those people that I’ve met and liked despite our differences, were actually thinking about how much they fundamentally despised me.

Right, well it’s a new and horrible day. One foot in front of the other. I should try to be mature and refer to the new president by his real name… but that’s going to have to wait until I stop throwing up in my mouth.

  1. National agony. I was lying awake after the election, sick to my stomach and feeling terribly alone on a sinking island of sanity until I remembered a couple things:

    1. Hillary won the popular vote. The majority of Americans DON’T WANT Trump. And her margin is smaller than reality because:

    2. Trump “won” in an election with truly disgraceful levels of voter disenfranchisement. Let’s be honest, Democrat disenfranchisement. What was it? 868 fewer polling places this year, in places where 80% of the voters vote Democrat? And the voter ID laws that keep far more people away from the polls than they should, even people with IDs.

So no, America is not as hateful as Donald Trump. A lot of us are. Too many of us are. But even more of us are decent human beings, good human beings, and so long as we can manage to stay in touch with and aware of each other for the next 4 (2!) years, then we can survive this sickness.

Let me know if you hear about ways to resist him in the meantime!
For starters there’s the “Grab ’em by the wallet” pledge to not spend any money on Inauguration Day, then donate to charity the day after. Show that we still care, and that we just might matter.

  2. It does seem to be the one silver lining that everyone can agree on is that this election result is spurring people to become more aware of local and federal government activity, and how they can have a part in shaping their communities!
Loving your posts on the election by the way, they are providing much needed relief!
